EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY IN THE GARRISON OF BIALA PODLASKA BETWEEN YEARS 1918-1939

In the interwar period, Biala Podlaska was a garrison town where the 9th light artillery and 34th infantry regiments were stationed. The presence of soldiers resulted in creating special relations on the basis of which permanent and strong relationships between the military and the local community could be established, especially on the political, economical and socio-cultural levels in the broadest sense of this word. The army also played an important role in the youth’s lives as far as their career is concerned – very often, being on duty gave an opportunity for young soldiers to expand their knowledge about Poland and the world, to get to know the acheivements of civilization, like for example radio or cinema, and eventually, to become professionals. This article aims to present how important was an educational activity among soldiers, to discuss the activity of the Polish White Cross, pre-conscription training, fighting the illiteracy among soldiers and different kind of special courses held in the garrison. These activities played a major role in upbringing the growing army which fought for Polish independence.
