SOCIAL ADAPTATION BASED ON THE VALUES OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH AS AN AID TO PARENTS AFTER THE TRAUMA OF THE BIRTH OF A DISABLED CHILD

The utopian thinking, whose equivalent is “Hollywood”, pushes a lot of people in the false trap of understanding the essence of life combined only with the happiness. Such a situation makes impossible the true assessment of the reality, that is not only consisted of happiness but also of suffering. This suffering may cause many other traumatic events. One of them is the birth of a disabled child that confront the parents with the transition. Disturbing and even sometimes destroying completely the family life. Very often the parents, who gave birth to the disabled child, have the feeling that now all is finished that “the world has fallen down”. They need the support to get out of this deadlock, the support of the practical activity by the social work. This support, though essential and invaluable, aids the family in adjusting to the new life “only outside”. The parents, who gave birth to the disabled child, need some help too, they need some help in explaining what has happened to them in the transcendental sense. It seems that the catholic faith, in this respect, explains the essence of the cross, it enables, especially in the time of suffering, that touch them.
