THE RELIGIOUS LIFE IN THE SIEDLCE GARRISON DURING THE INTERWAR PERIOD

After Poland won its independency the military authorities made efforts to organize an independent parish life within the garrisons. All garrisons of the 9th Infantry Division the units of which were quartered, among others, in Siedlce garrison had their own churches which were created on the foundations of former army Orthodox churches. The main task of each military chaplain was pastoral support among soldiers, preparation of soldiers before taking a military oath, organization and celebration of all religious holidays and important national holidays, anniversaries of National Uprisings etc. Apart from purely religious work military chaplains conducted also a strong educational-cultural activity. Their duty, among others, was to support all actions and ventures approved by the field Bishop’s Curia, most frequently by organizing fund-raisers and charity collections. Throughout the entire interwar period the military chaplains from the Siedlce garrison, together with the soldiers, actively participated in the religious-patriotic life of the region. Army priesthood had a significant impact especially on soldiers with village background, while lectures and sermons largely supplemented the work of educational officers.
